When it comes to gaming experience every gamer wants the best possible set-up and that includes monitors also. For monitors, there are lots of variety out there with new ones coming in daily. G Sync- a word every gamer has been throwing around loosely lately, and everyone wants it. But is G-Sync worth it? To adequately answer this question it is best to introduce what Nvidia G-Sync is and what it has to offer.
What Is G-Sync?
Understanding the concept of G-Sync without the knowledge of V-Sync is futile. So we are going to give a short explanation of V-Sync.
Before we talk about these technologies, we need to talk about video cards and monitors, because it is to optimize the communication between these two that led to the development of V-Sync and G-Sync. The relationship is basically “production” of the images by the video card and the display of images by the monitor, however in this process there are some limitations, in the case of the monitor the limitation is its refresh rate or the famous Hertz, a monitor for example of 60Hz can reproduce 60 cycles per second, or 60 FPS, as you prefer. Video cards, depending on their capacity and how heavy the games are, can reproduce many more frames per second. In this operating cycle, as the frames are produced in greater quantity and faster when they are sent to the monitor, it is not able to display all these frames correctly,
To solve this problem is that V-Sync, G-Sync technologies were invented. The first of these to emerge was V-Sync, Vertical Synchronization. It basically limits the performance of the video card to the refresh rate of the monitor, theoretically this is great, however the failure of V-Sync occurs because the video card can not generally maintain a constant rate, suffering falls in some moments, it is in these cases another problem occurs, which is called “stuttering”.
This problem occurs when the video card suffers inconsistencies in the frame rate, suffering, for example, a sudden drop, from 60 fps to 30 fps, during this drop stuttering occurs, which is a repetition of frames, being visualized on the monitor as a small locking. Another problem that V-Sync causes are the “input lag”, which occurs due to the slow rate of transfer of frames from the card to the monitor, causing the commands executed on the mouse or the keyboard to be displayed on the screen with a small delay. For players looking for competitive modes, the input lag greatly impairs the performance of the game.
As V-Sync ended up a problem and brought in two more, then G-Sync was invented, which this time worked differently through hardware. G-Sync is an NVIDIA technology, developed for monitors and working in sync with the video cards of the brand, unlike the V-Sync, that the video card adapted its performance to the monitor, now with this technology the monitor is which works with the variable refresh rate, taking into account the variation of the GPU. This technology provides greater game flow, correcting lag, tearing and stutter input problems.
There are different types of affordable Sync available in the market today but why is G-Sync so expensive?
Why Are G-Sync Monitors Expensive?
Due to its quite exorbitant price, some gamer tends to think “do I need G-Sync” but what they do not understand is why they are so expensive.
For G-Sync to work properly, hardware must be compatible, technology is available from 650ti Boost models, and a monitor with the technology is required. G-Sync monitors have a module that is responsible for control panel, this module is licensed by NVIDIA, which charges royalties, for manufacturers to use such technology on their monitors, as for transmission, G-Sync works only through the Display Port. Since Nvidia is the sole distributor of this module monitor manufacturers need to increase the price to cover for the extra cost of obtaining G-Sync Technology for their monitors.
What Other Choice Do You Have?
Free-Sync is an alternative to G-Sync and it functions as basically the same features as G-Sync but is a technology adopted by AMD and works only with the chips of the brand, as in the case of G-Sync and NVIDIA. The difference here is the distribution of this technology, as the name itself says it is Free, of free use and adaptation, for this reason, the monitors with this technology end up being cheaper, in comparison to those that to NVIDIA license, that makes it much more expensive due to royalties.
Is G-Sync Worth It?
Depending on your budget and preference G-Sync is worth the extra cost. It provides you with future proof specifications that will make your monitor display games that will be released years to come perfectly. It is a smart investment if you are planning on saving for the future.
It is the perfect technology for gamers who play demanding games and want it to run smoothly without any tearing or input lag. When compared to the free-sync technology which is more affordable but G-Sync provides the best results even with no frame-rate restriction.
